Miniature Display Stand Size Guide & Comparison

One of the final questions hobbyists ask before upgrading their hobby desk is: "Will my entire squad actually fit?" Shelf space is a finite resource, and if your display system isn't efficient, you’re just creating more clutter.

The Gold Standard: Space Efficiency

WarSplay is designed to eliminate the "foam case burial" by using a stadium seating layout. This allows you to fit more models into a smaller footprint than flat shelves or high-cost acrylic alternatives, while ensuring the back row remains perfectly visible.

The Brutal Capacity Breakdown

We build our stands to match the most common unit sizes in modern wargaming. Here is the exact capacity for our core modular display system:

  • WarSplay Classic: 17 Miniatures
Designed for standard infantry. It features 17 precision-cut slots sized for 32mm bases. This is the ultimate choice for full squads plus a few attached characters.
  • WarSplay Classic Mini: 8 Miniatures
A compact version for skirmish games and elite units. It holds 8 x 32mm miniatures, making it perfect for tight desk spaces or monitor stands.
  • WarSplay Hero: 9 Mixed Miniatures
Built for centrepieces. It holds seven 32mm infantry, one large 80mm monster/vehicle base, and one 75x42mm cavalry/outrider base.

Real-World Layout Examples

Base sizes vary, especially in systems compatible with Warhammer 40,000® or Age of Sigmar®. Here is how to plan your layout:

1. The "Standard Infantry" Layout (32mm Bases)

Using a WarSplay Classic, you can fit a full 10-man squad on the bottom two tiers, leaving the top tier for your officers and standard bearers. It is the densest possible way to display 17 models without them looking like a disorganised pile.

2. The "Heavy Support" Layout (40mm Bases)

Because our tiers are open-fronted, 40mm bases (like heavy infantry) fit comfortably on the tiers. However, you will need to "stagger" them. On a WarSplay Classic, you can comfortably fit 10 to 12 x 40mm models by leaving a small gap between each base, ensuring no shoulders overlap.

3. The Skirmish & Warband Layout

For smaller squad games, the Skirmish & Warband stands are the ideal fit. They allow you to showcase a diverse range of specialists (6-10 models) in a very small footprint, typically under 10cm of depth.

When to Size Up?

If you find your models are overhanging the edges or you are forced to hide beautiful paint details behind larger capes and wings, it is time to expand. Our modular display system allows you to line up multiple stands side-by-side to create a seamless wall of miniatures inside your glass cabinets.

If you are struggling with larger centrepieces, our Character & Hero Podiums provide the extra verticality needed to ensure your army leaders aren't dwarfed by the rank-and-file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will 25mm bases fit on these stands?

Yes. 25mm bases (common in older systems or smaller skirmish games) fit perfectly with even more breathing room than 32mm bases. You can easily fit the full 17 models without any risk of overlap.

How do the stands compare to standard acrylic stairs?

Generic acrylic risers are often too deep or too narrow for wargaming bases and reflect harsh light. WarSplay is precision-sized for wargaming with a premium anti-glare finish. To see the full breakdown, read our guide on Acrylic Cases vs Open Stands.

Can I magnetise these to increase stability?

Absolutely. For those with magnetised armies, we offer steel-insert pods that snap into the tiers. You can learn more in our guide on how to magnetise WarSplay for maximum security when used as a space-saving hobby desk organiser.
